Two years have swiftly gone by since the momentous South Yarra Station upgrade was revealed to the public. Now, as we retrospectively assess its impact, it becomes clear how this project has monumentally altered Melbourne's transport landscape. With an investment of $12.23 million, the enhancement has not only optimised daily commuting but has also created a significant improvement to the station operation, passenger flow and safety of commuters crossing busy Toorak Road to board the tram.
A Triumph in Integration
Every commendable urban development project thrives on its knack for harmoniously integrating diverse components. The South Yarra Station upgrade stands as a shining example of this principle.
The integration of the Toorak Road Tram Stop marked a confident stride into the modern age. The introduction of a level-access tram stop, syncing flawlessly with Melbourne's low-floor trams, demonstrated a common-sense vision for the upgrade planning. The addition of dedicated bike lanes further accentuated this vision, resulting in an intersection where trams, cyclists, and pedestrians exist in a significantly improved movement flow.
South Yarra Station's Transformation
The improvement of the station extended beyond mere visual enhancement; it delved deeper using PTV and Department of Transport's ethos of considering functionality and user-centric design. By doubling the concourse area, judiciously repositioning the myki gates, and brightening spaces with superior lighting, the station has embraced changes that are both nuanced and consequential.

The improved canopy, gracing the station entrance on Toorak Road, is both a beacon of modern design and a practical shield against the elements. The station entrance is well announced to the street with clear signage.
Toorak Road's Evolution
Skepticism initially surrounded the proposal to modify traffic conditions at the Toorak Road intersection. However, a meticulous year-long trial, backed by affirmative community feedback, vindicated the decision.
A notable 70% of respondents from Engage Vic endorsed the alterations. The prevailing sentiment? A marked enhancement in pedestrian safety and a significant reduction in vehicular near-misses.

Then there was the time and impacts to build it the new stop. But from a 7 News video, you see that the Government had a great plan, an short 8 day shut down to minimise traffic impacts. The new stop, a fleeting success, providing accessible access for commuters, and enabling the all important E-Class tram to operate on Toorak Road.
Reflecting on Success
Behind the visible facade of steel, glass, and concrete lay an undercurrent of collaborative efforts. The collective endeavor wasn't just about bricks and mortar but about a shared vision to rejuvenate and revolutionise. A culmination of ideas came together at the right time, prompted by the need to upgrade the tram stop, resulting in what was hoped to be just the first stage of plans to improve the station and precinct. The project's crowning glory lies not merely in its architectural completion but in its wholehearted embrace by its primary beneficiaries - Melbourne's daily commuters.
The Department of Transport and Planning is undertaking is working with the local community to plan for the future of the station, and its surrounds, to support South Yarra by developing a precinct master plan to transform the South Yarra station precinct to a more accessible station.

Looking back, the South Yarra Station upgrade emerges not just as an architectural marvel but as a testament to what can be achieved when passion aligns with purpose. It inspires and lays down a roadmap for future endeavors, signaling that with thoughtful planning and unwavering commitment, we can indeed craft urban masterpieces.
