Introduction

Belgrave Station multi-level car park project stands as a significant milestone, particularly due to its innovative trial of electric vehicle (EV) chargers. This project, completed in December 2023, highlights the positive impact of integrating sustainable transport solutions into public infrastructure.

Project Overview

The upgrade of the Belgrave Station car park aimed to address parking shortages and enhance accessibility for commuters. The project saw the construction of a new multi-deck car park, increasing the station's parking capacity by 470 spaces, bringing the total to 640 spaces. This expansion includes 16 accessible car spaces on the ground floor, ensuring inclusivity for all users.

A key feature of the new car park is the trial of six electric vehicle charging stations, part of a broader effort to promote sustainable transport options.

The integration of EV chargers at the Belgrave Station car park represents a forward-thinking approach to public transport infrastructure. The trial aims to encourage the adoption of electric vehicles by providing convenient charging options for commuters. Key aspects of the EV charger trial include:

  • Promoting Sustainable Transport: The installation of EV chargers supports the transition to cleaner, more sustainable transport options.

  • Convenience for Commuters: Providing charging facilities at a major transport hub makes it easier for EV owners to keep their vehicles charged and ready for use.

  • Data Collection and Analysis: The trial allows for the collection of data on usage patterns, informing future decisions about the expansion of EV charging infrastructure.

Enhancements to the Station Precinct

In addition to the EV chargers, the project included several improvements to the station precinct aimed at creating a more efficient and user-friendly environment:

  • Bus Interchange Upgrade: Featuring updated line marking, new seating, and a priority exit lane for buses to reduce congestion and improve efficiency.

  • Pedestrian Connectivity: Upgraded pedestrian connections between Hayes Place and Belgrave Station to ensure safe and convenient access.

  • Improved Access: Road widening and the creation of an undercover pick-up and drop-off area to facilitate smoother traffic flow.

Community Involvement and Benefits

Community engagement played a pivotal role in the success of this project. Input from local residents and commuters was instrumental in shaping the final design, ensuring the car park met the community's needs. The project's benefits are manifold:

  • Increased Parking Capacity: Alleviating parking pressures in Belgrave’s town centre and freeing up spaces for shoppers and traders.

  • Seamless Transport Connections: Enabling easier transitions between different modes of transport, from driving and biking to using the bus and train services.

  • Support for Sustainable Transport: Encouraging the use of electric vehicles and bicycles, contributing to environmental sustainability.

Project Milestones

The Belgrave Station car park upgrade was a multi-phase project, reflecting extensive planning and execution:

  • Initial Planning: Early community engagement and concept design development.

  • Detailed Design and Funding: Incorporation of community feedback and securing necessary funding.

  • Construction: Phased construction including structural framework, installation of key features, and final touches.

Future Prospects

The Belgrave Station car park is part of a larger initiative to improve public transport infrastructure across Victoria. Building multi-deck carparks at stations started with Syndal station and has been a successful initiative to utilise compact sites at designated Park n' Ride stations. The successful integration of EV chargers in this project provides valuable insights and sets a precedent for future infrastructure developments. The data collected from this trial will guide the expansion of EV charging facilities, supporting the broader adoption of electric vehicles.

Conclusion

The Belgrave Station multi-level car park project, with its innovative EV charger trial, exemplifies the potential of integrating sustainable solutions into public transport infrastructure. This project highlights the importance of accessibility, sustainability, and efficiency in modern transport solutions, setting a benchmark for future initiatives.
